How to setup a Logitech webcam microphone with Skype on Ubuntu Linux

I bought a new webcam recently. The camera worked with Ubuntu as soon as I plugged it in but but the microphone didn't work with Skype until I set it up. This is very easy but it took me a very long time to figure out so I thought I'd make a note here in case anyone has the same trouble.

My setup is as follows:

  • Xubuntu 12.10, 13.04
  • Skype 4.1
  • Logitech c270 webcam

Here's how to make it work:

  1. Sign into Skype and open the options, go to the 'sound devices' tab.
  2. Start a test call. Before the call is finished, open PulseAudio Volume Control and go to the 'Recording' tab.
  3. Still while the test call is going on - change the Skype input to the Webcam microphone.

That's it!

Hi, thanks for the info. I've never been able to get it all hooked together in Linux (running xubuntu 14.04 now. Tried your fix and it worked right out of the box as it were, 1st shot! Maybe I'll start using it now. I had to use skype on a slow old laptop with XP.
